* One out of four bypass surgery
patients experience
postoperative cognitive
dementia as long as 6 months
after surgery.
* Ten percent of elderly patients
experience major or fatal
perioperative complications.
* Each year, an estimated
20,000 to 40,000 patients
experience anesthesia
awareness.
* About 80,000 patients a year
have a heart attack within a
month of surgery.
* Almost 40,000 patients
experience a stroke related to
surgery each year.
* All surgery patients, regardless
of age, sex or race, suffer from
postoperative complications,
ranging from pain to nausea
to fatigue.
FOUNDATION FOR
PERIOPERATIVE RESEARCH & EDUCATION
The Foundation for Perioperative Research & Education (FPRE)is dedicated to reducing complications related to surgery and anesthesia through research, public advocacy, and professional education and training.
Every day, approximately 60,000 people in the U.S. undergo surgery, varying from minor cosmetic procedures to organ transplants. Most patients tolerate surgery and anesthesia quite well. However, a significant number of patients experience debilitating, life-changing, or fatal complications during surgery or recovery — what is known as the perioperative period — even though the operation itself may be successful.
Common perioperative complications include memory loss, heart attack, stroke, and anesthesia awareness (in which the patient has some degree of sensation during surgery but is helpless to communicate his or her plight). The elderly are particularly vulnerable to these problems, especially cognitive difficulties.
Unfortunately, the nature of perioperative complications is not well understood, and little funding is available to underwrite research in this vital field.
A non-profit organization based at NYU Langone Medicine Center in New York City, FRPE was created to address these shortfalls.
